Jim Garavuso was always frustrated with having to take his camera apart to change a battery. To him disassembling the strap to perform such a routine operation was annoying and silly. Cameras are supposed to be easy and fun to use.
Early in 2005, Jim decided to put his Industrial design and Engineering background to use. He started by sketching out some ideas on an easy to use system comprised of an aluminum plate that could fit snuggly on the bottom of most camera bodies. Of course, it had to have a place to fasten his Canon hand strap and be simple, strong and well thought out.
Jim’s first attempts were a machined aluminum plate with a stainless steel pin on one side to fasten his existing strap. After a few trial shoots, the strap caught the eye of some of his friends who wanted to try them out.
And so began Camdapter.
Rarely satisfied, Jim focused on the drawbacks created by the current design of hand straps - sweaty hands, poor construction and incorrect sizing. He started playing with designs until he came up with something he felt was a comfortable alternative - full grain leather, wide and easy to construct, and easy to use.
After mass producing the first model, a single ended Camdapter, Jim
moved into production on the current Camdapter plus. Working through a crude web site, Jim marketed this model to news groups and camera enthusiasts who urged him to develop models to work with other camera bodies. This took him to developing the camdapter that fits Canon Rebel and other models.
The Camdapter line of products will always be driven by Jims focus on design and engineering and customer service. Future plans include adding new adapters which will fit other quick release systems, new hand and neck strap designs, as well as a line of Tripod QR systems.
